on all these stories throughout the next three hours. >>> president obama today keeping his focus on jobs, as we have mentioned. the september jobs report showed a drop in the unemployment rate to 7.8%. the president said in his weekly web address that the burden is on congress to keep the economy moving forward. nbc news white house correspondent, mike viqueira joins me now. mike, what more political fallout do you think we're going to see over the jobless numbers? >> reporter: the jobs report was both symbolic and substantiative. symbolic because it got below 8%, that's considered a threshold over which no president has ever been re-elected. and substantiative because it gets down to where the unemployment rate is -- was when president obama took office in january of 2009. and don't you know, melissa, yesterday at two campaign rallies in the battleground states of virginia and ohio, one each, the president pointed that out. here at the white house, at the campaign, campaign headquarters in chicago, they are certainly hopeful that this will change the narrative, stem some of the momentum

obama is coming in next time with a different approach. so that make it is a separate challenge and an additional challenge for obama. the other guy knows what he's going to do, he's going to be more aggressive. what does romney do next time to meet a more aggressive obama? mark? >> one thing, chris, i think that the obama campaign has kind of telegraphed their strategy by calling him the serial evader. i think they've already said that's going to be a strategy. >> is that healthy to say you're going to prosecute or come in as a prosecutor? >> i think the romney campaign has a pretty good radar screen and they have picked that up. i think they will have romney well-prepared for that. i also think it's going to be interesting with the town hall format because this is a very different kind of environment, and, you know, i think this is where romney is going to have to connect and feel people's pain and so that's naturally something that obama does well. we'll see how well romney adapts to that environment. >> i'm hoping candy crowley gets more in there. she's much more political t

at that and say that's not going to work in the next two debates. and i think team obama is probably looking at that right now and saying okay, we have to step into this debate. we can't stand back and i would differ with you, rachel about the moderator point in this debate. i actually like this kind of debate because the moderator is not a factor. he leaves it up to the debaters to make it a debate. mitt romney's team knew that and mitt romney came into this debate determined to make it a debate. no one brought up green jobs. the moderator didn't bring up green jobs. mitt romney did to use it as a tool against the president. the president has to realize that his side and he is under the same obligation to drive the debate from his side himself. the moderator is not going to drive this debate. >> that's exactly right. that's sort of the point that i was trying to make about how the different approaches of romney and obama played very differently with this sort of a format and that romney just rolled over the format and made it about everything he wanted it to be. everything on domestic polic

't we need to see more of president obama, what we saw today, the next time he shares the stage with mitt romney? can we afford to see more of the same? >> oh, i think we all want to see the one we saw last night. i mean, you know, i think the best story i heard this morning about how obama supporters felt was a friend last night after the debate, a friend said that his wife woke up in the middle of the night and she thought she had a nightmare and she actually realized she was remembering the debate. now, the -- it's a true story. now, i think there are things in that debate that will actually come back to haunt mitt romney which i'll get to, but i think president obama was so determined not to make a mistake, not to upset the trajectory of the campaign, not to look like somebody who would offend swing voters, that he went all the way over the other way. and that just didn't work. it may -- but it may work in two respects. one is, i think there are swing voters, particularly women, who found mitt romney too hot. put aside the lies -- >> bully. >> -- and the half true truths. i

, and i think he's going to have to do better in the next debates. the thing we know about barack obama from every report, he's one of the most competitive people around, so i bet you the week after the next debate, we will not be having a conversation about how poorly he did but a conversation about how great he did. the bigger issue here, the republicans are going to have a tough chance because they don't really have an opportunity to spend more money on fields. you can't just dump enough money on the ground in the last month to try to turn on a field operation. that's something you have to build over weeks and months coming up to an election and there's no evidence that i have seen anywhere, i was down in tampa last weekend dealing with a lot of the obama troops, and there's no ground i have seen where republicans have really focused on the field operation. >> guys, great of you to come in on friday. have a great weekend. >>>making news, janet napolitano is on her way to arizona after the death of nicholas ivy. that's the border agent who was killed on tuesday. his funeral is set for

on tone but substance. obama was out on the stump the very next day sounding very much like his old self. i feel as though, you know, the conventions give you permission to be the wild-eyed partisan, but for that to work, you really have to have applause. at these debates when you're with an actual audience and the audience is silent, you really can't -- those red meat lines don't work as well. you have to take on a more moderate tone. steve, what do you think? is this historically the time during the campaign, the conventions are over, when the candidates both kind of come back to the center and stop flinging the red meat to try and talk right down the middle? >> there's a very important difference between how obama is approaching going after the middle in this campaign and how he did in his presidency and what romney is now doing. the story line from pundits and the press now is romney is moving to the middle. that's certainly the tone of what he did in the debate. that's the tone his rhetoric. it was centrist. the question is whether it's obama sounding like a centrist in the debate o
